2008 Kia Rio | new car review

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 by

The Rio has been one of the mainstays of Kia’s model range and is
offered in and sedan forms. Although the USP of this model
follows the established Kia pattern of not breaking any new ground in
terms of performance or driving appeal in general, Kia has slightly
deviated from its usual path to provide the Rio with a new set of
clothes and enhanced powerplants. The idea was to use clever
engineering under the skin to make it handle better.

The 2008
benefits extensively from the ground up redesign two years ago as
well as from the engineering synergies with Hyundai. It features a
longer wheelbase, a wider track and more horsepower, providing better
handling, a smoother ride and improved levels of performance. It is a
smart looker with well-defined proportions without any overt
over-styling cues.

As a result of the new
dimensions, the car is also roomier offering more front and back
legroom and more overall comfort. Accommodation has always been good
in the Rio and the interior is simple and efficient with no frills
needed to spruce up the environ – all the basics are provided and
they are well sorted out. The Rio is a quintessential Kia in the
sense that it is built to a price, catering to the lower end of the
market, yet aspires to join the big boys (read that as European and
Japanese manufacturers) in style, ride and handling.

Considering the
competition in the segment, the car maker has once again raised its
game and the Rio is a very different kind of Kia as quality levels
have been upgraded to compete favourably with its rivals in the
B-segment.

Powered by a 1.4-litre
engine producing a healthy 94bhp and 125 Nm of torque, drive is sent
to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox.

The Rio is yet another
example of Kia moving out of its staid design philosophy as it bids
to join its Hyundai cousins with a stylistic expression that is in
sync with the times and the opposition. And all this at competitive
price…
