2008 Kia Mohave | new car review

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 by

Kia’s flagship SUV, the Mohave gets its name from the arid Mohave Desert located south east of California. Kia claims this to be a full size SUV, in our opinion however, its home in the segment, sitting opposite the likes of Nissan’s
Pathfinder, Hyundai’s Veracruz, Honda’s MRV and Suzuki’s XL7.

Kia has designed the Mohave to seat seven adults, and powered it with two engine options – a 3.8-litre V6 with 274bhp on tap and the bigger 4.6-litre V8 making a meaty 342 horsepower. The V6 transmits power through a 5-speed automatic gearbox, while the V8 will shift power to the wheels via a 6-speed autobox. To begin with, just the V6 is going to be sold in the Middle East, with V8 expected to be launched sometimes early 2009. There are two trim levels – LX & EX, 8 exterior color options and 3 interior trimming color combinations to choose from. A choice between either an ‘Automatic Full-Time 4WD’ or a less complicate ‘Part-Time 4WD’ is on the cards as well. The price conscious buyer’s are likely to opt for the simpler part time 4WD option.

A car like SUV, the Mohave can tackle hard packed gravel surface with comfort but gets a bit uneasy in the soft sand, will do the job for a drive on the beach though. Space in the luggage compartment nearly disappears with the third row seat upright – its a trade off between space for extra passengers and luggage space.

The Koreans have put in a lot of attention to design and this reflects both, inside and outside the Mohave. The quality of materials used inside is very unlike the perceived Korean quality – its much nicer and lifts the game by a few notches in their favor. Both Kia and Hyundai have been working very hard upping their assault on the Japs, and it seems to be going in the right direction.
