2008 Jaguar XJ | new car review

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 by

The bedrock on which Jaguar is based, the XJ sedan has delivered the blend of attractions that Jaguar customers have traditionally demanded: elegance, style and comfort along with spirited performance.

Virtually unchanged from last year, the XJ is a timeless classic testing the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the large luxury segment. Whilst the Germans keep on refreshing their models quite often, the XJ just keeps on plugging on with a design which, like that of the Porsche 911, goes back a long way.

As automobiles tend more towards generic and distinctions get harder to draw, even at the top of the market, the XJ sedan seems unique. While the XJ’s lithe, elegant lines ooze class and its cabin retains the charm of an upper-crust clubroom, it remains to be seen how long this willcontinue as Jaguar really needs a new modern design if it has to seriously challenge its German rivals.

The XJ sedan comes in regular and long-wheelbase versions. Stretched five inches, the long-wheelbase models offer enough rear-seat room to recline and watch a movie after lunch on a flip-down wooden tray. Yet these longer, roomier Jaguars are for practical purposes as quick, nimble and fuel-efficient as the shorter wheelbase versions. The supercharged XJR is the quickest and nimblest of all – a true driver’s car!

The XJ uses a range of V6 and V8 powerplants. The top-of-the-line XJR sees a potent 4.2-litre supercharged V8 nestling under the longish hood and delivering 400bhp. The same engine without the supercharger develops 300bhp, while a 3.5-litre V8 pumps out 262 horses. All engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and power is transmitted to the rear wheels.

All the different spec models are loaded with sophisticated safety and performance technology, but all that technology is tucked away in a less obtrusive fashion, and it generally works without much annoyance or distraction.
