2008 Hyundai Santa Fe | new car review, prices & specs

’s challenger in the sports and leisure off-road segment, the 2008 Santa Fe is a smart looking machine designed to take on established players in a busy and growing segment at their own game and at a much lower price. This is not to say that because it is cheaper than the rest, it is not a competent vehicle. On the contrary, the 2008 does all that its rivals can do and in some cases even surpass its expectations.

The Santa Fe has an unibody construction, instead of the body-on-frame technique of a traditional SUV. Compared to a proper lifestyle 4×4, the Hyundai Santa Fe looks fresh, shapely and attractive. It was revamped last year and it carries on in the same vein for 2008 being leaner and sharper in its design.

The 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe delivers on safety, with six airbags and standard anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, stability control, and traction control.  Seating five in relative comfort, the Santa Fe provides an easy going interior with good quality materials. The inside is well crafted and does not look tacky. Ingress and egress is easy thanks to the low step-in height. As is the norm nowadays, there are a multitude of storage options inside – from cup holders to trays under the seats and what have you – to secure bits and pieces safely. The 60:40 split rear seat helps in enhancing luggage area.

The Santa Fe’s H-matic gearbox, on the top spec V6 model has been designed and developed by Porsche and is of the Tiptronic kind wherein one can use it as a manual. The V6 produces 188 horses from its 2.7-litres. A full-time four-wheel-drive system is used on both models, with the smaller unit using a five-speed manual gearbox to deliver power to all four wheels.

Hyundai is on a roll. Its vehicles are proving to have the reliability and quality people expect from Japanese cars. The 2008 Santa Fe could be a true alternative to the competition offering big SUV features in a smaller package with features galore.
