2008 Ford Mondeo | new car review

The name ‘Mondeo’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Mundus’, meaning ‘world’. It is indeed an apt name as Ford introduced this car as its vehicle for all markets globally.  The fourth generation is a new stylish car building on its traditional strengths while adding premium segment features.

From the exterior, this car is extremely attractive with elegant proportions and its dynamic and eye-catching styling takes full advantage of Ford’s hottest ‘kinetic design’  form language which Ford says is its way of expressing energy in motion. Ford Mondeo has successfully managed to carve itself a significant position in the mid-size segment – especially the fleet sector – since its debut in 2002 in the Middle East. From the very beginning of its career, this car has boasted class exclusive and segment leading features. The Ford Mondeo continues that trend with driver-focussed technologies such as keyless entry, keyless start and Ford’s new human machine  interface instrument display among other things. Five distinct trim series are available: Core, Trend, Ghia, Ghia X and Titanium models.

The front end has chamfered corners and a deep offset between the top of the bonnet and the front mudguards. A muscular shoulder line runs through the side of the car to a high point at the rear, while the headlamps use the largest surface area ever used on a Ford passenger car till now. Available in hatchback, sedan and station wagon forms,  he Mondeo makes for a versatile model catering to a wide section of buyers unlike its Japanese opposition.

The driver gets a ‘cockpit’ driving position as the higher waistline and flow-through centre console combine to enhance the cosseted feeling for front seat occupants. Two  powertrain options are available including the 2.0-litre 145hp four-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. A new 2.3-litre 161hp 4-cylinder engine with 6-speed automatic transmission is the sportier version. ESP and ABS are standard and the comprehensive safety kit now includes knee airbags.

The 2008 Ford Mondeo has been smartened up and kitted out with the latest gadgets, allowing it to compete favourably with its Japanese opposition in the Middle East.
