2008 Ford Expedition | new car review
The Expedition full-size SUV is meant for utility, not posing. It carries people, hauls gear, and is a competent load hauler. Revised extensively in 2006, new features include a rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards.
In continues in the same vein for the 2008 MY and is offered in two lengths – the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the Expedition EL with its 131-inch wheelbase.
Inside, the Expedition features rich materials and generous space in all three seating rows. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. Long wheelbase versions add even more cargo-carrying capacity, which is especially noticeable when trying to load lots of gear behind the third-row seats.
All Expeditions are powered by Ford’s 300hp 5.4-litre V8 with six-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. Rear-wheel drive (2WD) or an electronically engaged four-wheel drive is available.
Several trim levels are available that begin with the entry-level XLT to the designer-styled Eddie Bauer edition. The XLT comes with cloth upholstery with front captain’s chairs (driver’s seat is six-way power adjustable), a 40/20/40 split-bench seat in the second row, and a rear cargo bin. A tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, MP3 connectivity are also part of the package.
Safety equipment includes front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, three-row head-protecting curtain side air bags with rollover deployment, tyre-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with brake assist, and electronic stability control with anti-rollover technology.
The Ford Expedition is a truck and it doesn’t pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because Ford trucks continue to have an good reputation for utility, reliability and durability.
