2008 Cadillac STS | new car review

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 by

The 2008 STS distinctive profile hasn’t changed much although it has been suitably facelifted; being very consistent with Cadillac’s art and science motif. Up front, however, the STS is all American, having abandoned any semblance of modern, European-style subtlety in favour of a boldly traditional egg-crate grille and vertically stacked headlights sited at the very ends of the long hood. In a similar vein, chromed air extractor vents now mark the previously clean flanks.

The super-performance STS-V avoids the retro look up front with polished stainless steel wire-mesh grilles above and below the front bumper, and a not particularly subtle power bulge in its engine hood. Its deeper front air dam incorporates brake scoops below the fog lights while the fender vents are more in line with the performance model’s extroverted character. Its 10-spoke wheels are unique; its rear spoiler more obvious. And in case you miss all that, it’s distinguished by V-Series badging and supercharged lettering on the front doors.

A new 3.6-litre direct-injection V6 developing 302 horsepower comes as standard in the STS, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Other engines include a V8 unit in various levels of tune.

The STS in all its iterations is a coming of age of Cadillac’s new found resurgence in the mid-size luxury car segment. It is a capable car with a visually different approach; upper-class interior with all the bells and whistles, excellent driving dynamics – the STS has it all. But it still needs to figure out what more it needs to do to attract buyers of European cars to its corner. Cadillac is working hard and time will tell whether it has been successful.
