2008 Cadillac BLS | new car review

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 by

The American brand’s entry-level premium sports sedan, the 2008 carries the marque’s distinctive styling and presence. The car was first introduced in Middle East in 2006 and its striking wedge shaped contours underscores Cadillac’s current design philosophy.

Adopting Cadillac’s edgy design, the BLS features stacked headlamps, fog lamps integrated into the body-coloured bumper and a narrow air intake below the eggcrate grille. The latest LED technology is used in the centre high-mounted brake light, which is prominently positioned on the trunk lid and extends across the vehicle. It also functions as a spoiler.

Based on Saab’s 9-3 sedan, the BLS adds Cadillac’s typical styling to a proven mechanical package. Given that both cars share the same basic proportions, Cadillac has been done well in differentiating the compact executive saloon from the car it’s based on. But the question is whether this is enough to tempt customers from their Audi A4s, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class?

Being a Cadillac, the interior had to be smart. The centre console is unique and looks and feels suitably upmarket, offsetting a steering wheel, indicator stalks and window controls shared with the 9-3. Adding to the interior’s charms, the ergonomics are sound, while the seats offer a decent range of manual adjustments. Tall drivers may find themselves wishing for a little more reach on the steering wheel, however, and the seats could do well with some side bolstering. But
the generous rear headroom makes the BLS a practical proposition for adults in the back, as does a deep 425-litre boot.

The Cadillac BLS is offered with a choice of three force fed engines. The range begins with two 2.0-litre four-cylinder versions (175/210 hp) and a 255hp six-cylinder unit with twin-scroll turbocharger. 5- or 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions are offered, depending on engine.
