2008 BMW Z4

When
it was launched it was characterized by convex and concave surfaces,
hard edges and gentle curvatures. These evocative design cues went on
to become Chris Bangle’s signature in all BMWs he designed later.
In that way the Z4 pioneered BMW’s new family design language while
maintaining all the classic hallmarks of a roadster – a long and
sleek bonnet, a long wheelbase with short overhangs, wide track and a
low center of gravity, all of which create a purposeful, sporting
impression.
BMW
also revived the hatchback coupe style with the fixed-top Z4, and
unlike their ugly Z3 predecessors, the new Z4s have a cool sloped
rear roof line. In most other respects, they are identical with the
roadsters, except for a more rigid body. The convertible Z4 has a
fabric top with excellent thermal and non-fade qualities, while the
new hatchback coupe has a fixed top.
The Z4 range as available in the region begins with the 261hp 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. The range topper is the 3.2-liter inline six developing 338hp and 365Nm of torque. Both these engines are available in convertible and coupe body styles.
Engineered
to set new standards in its class, the BMW Z4 has its focus on
agility and handling. Featuring the modified rear axle of the BMW 3
Series, the new Z4 has 50:50 front/rear weight distribution,
fade-free high performance brakes, run-flat tyres and DSC III as
standard.
Inside
there is ample evidence of BMW solidity and style. The interior
materials are nice to the touch while being sturdy and attractive.
The dash layout is such that the driver has all controls close at
hand. Trim levels can involve either wood or brushed aluminum, the
choice is there for the taking. Being a sports car means the Z4,
will, in all probability be driven hard. To this end, the seats are
supportive, being contoured for sporty driving while offering
long-trip comfort too.
The
Z4 is also equipped with Dynamic Drive Control. Compared with its
predecessor, luggage space has been increased to provide the new Z4
with a boot capacity of up to 260 litres, enough space for two golf
bags.
The
Z4 is a very evocative car and in its M Roadster and Coupe forms are
some of the most hardcore sports cars available in the region.
