The ‘upgraded’ model range for benefits from much more than a mere facelift and builds on the many virtues that made the original the brand’s top-selling model.

Beneath the stylish exteriors of ’s immensely popular sedan are a host of major technical innovations and enhancements which demand that the 6 models are indeed regarded as ‘great cars which just got even better’.

The upgraded Mazda6 now has retuned suspension for dynamic handling, a strengthened body shell, much improved NVH and a host of practical and cosmetic exterior and interior refinements.

Thanks to its youthful styling, the Mazda6 continues in the same vein with subtle, minimal changes to the exterior. The front grille is more deeply recessed and flatter, with a honeycomb mesh pattern. New headlight and tail light units feature dark grey bezels with chrome lamp surrounds, while both front and rear bumpers are restyled to emphasise the car’s sporty stance.

Modifications to the interior are more tangible compared to those on the outside of the car. The re-styled centre instrument panel is designed to deliver a high quality feel. The console now has re-styled switches, plus new surface materials and softer upholstery underscore the natural elegance of the cockpit.

The Mazda6 as available in the ME continue with a choice of two engines. The galant four-cylinder DOHC 2.0-litre all-aluminium unit develops 141 bhp and 181 Nm of torque, while the powerplant of choice for those who need more go in their drive can opt for the peppy and energetic 2.3-litre engine producing 159 horses and 207 Nm of torque. A four-speed Activematic Transmission Control System is employed driving the front wheels. A five-speed manual is also at hand for those who prefer shifting gears manually.

In the 6, Mazda has got a sedan that is utterly capable but there is a lack of awareness about its capabilities as well as functionality. Maybe more numbers would be seen on the roads if Mazda increases the quota for the Middle East, this being the common refrain from the dealers. The Mazda6 is a very good buy for those looking for a dependable family sedan or stationwagon away from the usual suspects like the other major Japanese brands.
