2009 Opel Vectra | new car review

Introduced in the summer of 2004, the current Vectra is built in Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, and is based on the GM Epsilon platform. It is available as a four-door sedan and stationwagon, while the five-door hatchback, known as the Vectra GTS, is meant to recall cult models from in the past such as the Commodore GTE of the 1970s.

The Vectra is Opel’s contender in the market and again like the Corsa, hasn’t been pushed aggressively to emphasize its capabilities. A handsome car by any standard, the Vectra is the first European application of GM’s front wheel drive Epsilon platform. The most distinctive feature of the Vectra is the newly designed front end with cylindrical, chrome-coloured lamp units behind clear glass.

Being a contender in the family sedan category, Opel has taken extra care to make the interior look as appealing as possible. The materials are by far the best ever seen on any Opel to date and contribute for a very high quality look and feel. In addition, all Vectra models feature a sporty three-spoke steering wheel which light up the sporty nature of the brand to some extend. The Vectra sets standards with its generous passenger space: head and leg room in the rear is among the best in class. The luggage compartment provides ample storage space of upto 500 litres, and by folding down the rear bench seat, this expands to 1050 litres in the four-door sedan, and to as much as 1360 litres in the five-door Vectra.

A range of Ecotec engines ranging in capacities from 2.2-litre to 3.2-litre are available. The 2.2-litre engine with direct injection makes 147 bhp and is available with a five-speed automatic transmission. The 211 bhp 3.2-litre V6 unit on the other hand is available with a five-speed automatic with ActiveSelect manual function.
