2009 Opel Astra | new car review

Astra’s striking features and dynamic appearance sets itself apart from its competitors in the compact class. The bodyline is well balanced with the right execution of concave and convex surfaces. took the Astra to the dissecting table at the end of 2004 and came back with a more aggressive and angular shape. The new car is totally different from the rounded body style that it sported in its previous incarnation.

The car is well balanced with an aerodynamic bodyline. It is so far available as a five-door , a five-door estate and a sporty , designated the GTC. Measuring 4.25 metres long, 1.79 metres wide and 1.46 metres high, with a 2.61-metre wheelbase, the five-door model has generous dimensions, resulting in comfort and ample space. While Astra passengers benefit from its spacious interior, even more room is offered by the Astra station wagon with a longer wheelbase, which joined the Astra family in the fall of 2004. In March 2005 a third unique model was added, the Astra GTC (Gran Turismo Compact).

Just as the exterior shines, the interior also exudes with German finesse and world class quality. This is evident not only in its look, but also in the high level of textural quality of all surfaces. The bold design elements in the Astra’s cockpit include the striking centre console with its large knobs and three-dimensional instruments. Opel has made use of chrome inserts in the cabin to give an overall sporty attitude to the interior too.

A total of five petrol displacements from 1.2 to 2.2-litres and power outputs from 75 to 147 bhp are available for the Astra. The exceptional fuel-efficiency of the ‘Twinport’ technology petrol engines makes them especially environmentally friendly. The wide range of engines is complemented by a transmission range which includes five or six-speed manual gearboxes, the Easytronic automated five-speed manual transmission, as well as a four or six-speed automatic.
