2007 Mercedes Benz CL-Class | new car review

The new seventh generation luxury boasts innovations that include the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system and Intelligent Light System with five lighting functions. In line with the company’s even greater emphasis on safety, the PRE-SAFE anticipatory occupant protection is another feature that comes as standard equipment.

Other equipment that comes in the form of new optional extras for the model year includes night view assist with infrared headlamps, reversing camera, voice control for car radio, DVD changer and navigation as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system. All these systems have been designed to provide increased handling safety and comfort.

Here is a big sports coupe that has proved its durability through no fewer than six revisions, most of which have been total redesigns. Yet the CL remains instantly recognisable for the styling of its front and rear lighting arrangements and the raked rear screen that sets it apart from the S-Class, for which it might, in previous generations, have been mistaken at a quick glance.

The interior is luxurious without detracting at all from the fact that this is a very much driver’s car. Mercedes have cut the engine options this year from four to two but who would question that when the choice is either 5.0 litre V8 or 6.0 litre V12 in the CL500 and CL600 respectively? In common with Mercedes’ other large cars, the automatic gearbox comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle change for those who prefer a manual feel to their driving.
