2007 Lexus GS | new car review

The first Lexus for truly global marketing, the GS is the brand’s defining big sports sedan. It has poise, presence and muscular stature inside its taut skin. Offered with a V6 or V8 engine, and bristles with the technology upon which Lexus has built its formidable reputation.

Now in its third generation, the GS was also the first Lexus model to feature the marque’s new L-Finesse design philosophy, characterized by swooping lines, a pulled-back cabin, and more muscular styling. The sleek shape of the GS is further streamlined by its aerodynamic underbody that uses flat components to help reduce air resistance, all of which give the GS an impressive 0.29 coefficient of drag.

The GS twins are plushly outfitted and the inside is the place to be in. There is an air of sophistication and class in the interior. The styles, design, build quality and what have you is something truly out of this world. The vehicle also premiered the latest generation of Lexus’ SmartAccess keyless system – adding a push-button start for the first time. Other unique features included a driver-side hidden panel for infrequently used controls, a standard touchscreen display in the centre console, LED lighting in the cabin, and Bluetooth technology.

Distinct in appearance, the GS twins promise even higher ownership rewards, thanks to the handling and performance delivered by its taut new chassis and high-performing new 3.0-litre V6 and 4.3-litre V8 engines. The V6 engine makes 245 bhp and 310 Nm of torque, while the GS430 ups the stakes with its brutal 300 bhp and 419 Nm of torque on tap. And to complement the powerful engines, the GS sports a six-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission.

Across the range, unmatched active and passive safety systems are provided, including Lexus’s advanced Pre-Crash Safety system, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) and a suite of up to 12 airbags.
