2007 Kia Sorento | new car review

The combines the style of a premium SUV, the strength of a rugged off-roader and the pricing and running costs of a compact 4×4. The Sorento’s main attractions are its Euro-slick exterior, spacious cabin, sub-100,000AED pricing for the top-spec model and simple model range.

Being Kia’s first foray into the prestige 4×4 market, the Sorento is styled with the sophisticated consumer in mind. It is characterized by distinctive, sleek, muscular lines that make it an eye-catching addition to the Kia line-up. The refined, sculpted front view features a sweeping V-shaped bonnet line that leads the eye naturally to the wide radiator grille with the oval Kia logo prominently displayed in the centre.

The Sorento marked Kia’s move into a decidedly up-market SUV turf, thanks to its high level of trim. The cabin features well thought out ergonomics including soft-touch plastics giving it a polished and accomplished look. The driver sits upright in the “pulpit” seating position and is assisted with a lumbar lever and dials for moving the seat cushion. As with most emerging manufacturers, the Sorento at times feels a bit over the top with its wood grain trim but to be fair Kia has managed to rein in its exuberance and kept the interior within sensible limits. Though dominated by the uninspiring plastics and the synthetic upholstery, the quality is actually not bad at all.

Kia has equipped the Sorento with a 3.3-litre V6 producing 241bhp and 307Nm of torque and this powerplant does a commendable job – on black tops or in the rough. The Sorento uses a five-speed auto, which automatically switches drive between two- and four-wheel drive depending on the conditions. A switch on the dash engages 4WD high range on the fly, while engaging low range needs the car has to be stationary. Built on a ladder frame construction, the Sorento feels like it has a unibody design. handling and ride quality is better than might be expected.
