2007 Kia Cerato | new car review

Kia’s Cerato came in to replace the ageing Shuma and the Sephia in 2002. Available in sedan as well as bodyshapes, the Cerato shares its underpinnings with that of Hyundai’s Elantra; but this is no exercise in badge engineering or re-paneling: extensive stiffening, especially of the floorpan, has allowed more leeway in suspension settings, giving the Cerato a character of its own.

‘Cerato’ (pronounced ‘Serrato’) means nothing, but it does mean business in the fiercely competitive C-segment, in which it squares up to, among others, the Toyota Corolla, claimed to be the world’s top-selling car, which was used as a benchmark.

The modern European influenced exterior of the Cerato is matched to a spacious and up-to-date interior, which will hold five adults and their luggage comfortably. The emphasis on refinement in the interior design and the use of high quality materials clearly represents the new generation of Kia products. The design is simple, modern and efficient.

Kia has finished the Cerato’s interior nicely; seats are comfortable with driving position perfect and the switchgear clear and simple. Even with tall front-seat passengers, rear knee-space is generous and headroom adequate, while the large boot allows easy loading. In all areas of comfort and what industry engineers refer to as NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), this Kia excels.

The Cerato is offered with two engines options: a 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre. As most Cerato buyers will not be habitual tyre squealers, but instead will enjoy a comfortable car with safe responses, these engines seem adequate. The 1.6’s overall performance is not startling with just 105 bhp on tap; the engine is pleasantly smooth and quiet. The 2.0-litre unit has more serious power with 143 horses to play with. Again, catering to the wrong end of the market means that transmissions offered are a toss between a manual and auto.

The high safety specification includes dual front airbags, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.
