2007 Hyundai Sonata | new car review, specs and prices

Looking considerably more European than its predecessor, the swage lines and surfeit of bright-work of the old Sonata have gone, replaced by a clean design. The Sonata is a mid-size car which neatly encapsulates Korean car makers values of reliability and affordability. They have also added something missing from the old range: calm.

Even though the previous-generation Sonata made a dramatic jump to the top spot in the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Initial Quality Study ranking of entry midsize cars, the new 2007 has been completely redesigned. It’s bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the car it replaces.

Exterior-wise, it goes against mid-size sedans, competition like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima and secondarily against the Chevrolet Epica and the Kia Optima. Inside, though, the 2007 Hyundai Sonata moves up a class, to large car proportions. marking it highly in creature comfort levels.

With minor and essentially immaterial exceptions, it lives up to that potential. It is roomier in almost every dimension than its midsize competitors, which is a surprise. Fit and finish is at par with most competing cars, which also is surprising. In terms of performance, it equals or bests comparably featured cars. Just as important, if not more so, the 2007 Hyundai Sonata is aggressively priced, positioned smack in the middle of the range of prices of the mid-size sedan segment.

At 4,895mm (overall length) and 1,850mm (overall width) respectively, the car’s length and width are 20mm larger than those of the Hyundai Grandeur XG, thus providing users with increased interior space. A modern and luxurious design has also been introduced to the interior of the new Sonata to give it a strong and dynamic impression. Emphasis has been put on passenger safety with the inclusion of curtain side airbags, in addition to the standard front dual airbags.

The 2007 Hyundai Sonata is available in the Middle East with either the 2.4-litre four-cylinder or the 3.3-litre V6. The 2.4-litre makes 161bhp while the powerful V6 packs a punch with 235bhp on tow and is shifted using a 5-speed auto transmission. The four-cylinder can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed auto transmission.
