2008 Aston Martin DB9 | new car review

Successor to the hugely successful DB7, the , is gaining well-deserved plaudits ever since it was launched by in 2004 as a grand tourer. The basis for the DB9 and indeed the full range is the VH platform (Vertical/Horizontal). Using cutting edge technology, it uses a lightweight aluminium-bonded space frame which helps reduce mass weight by 25 per cent yet offers massive torsional rigidity.

The DB9 is powered by an awesome 6.0-litre V12 engine featuring 48 valves producing 450hp. The engine fires by pushing a clear glass starter button that is sand-etched with the Aston Martin logo. It glows red when the engine is running and blue when the DB9 is turned off. Shades of James Bond, in a way!

The cabin is awash in leather, wood and aluminium trimmings and Aston Martin offers an impressive choice of leather on order. In fact, most Astons, if not all, are bespoke according to buyer’s whims and fancies. Gauges are floodlit rather than backlit for maximum clarity at night. Linn, a Scottish audio expert, provides 950-watts of maximum power and a
200-watt subwoofer.

The DB9 can reach a top speed nearing 300kph. A six-speed manual transmission is standard; a Touchtronic manually interactive six-cog automatic with paddle shifters is available (with most Middle Eastern buyers opting for this auto box). For a person in a hurry, the DB9 will rush from rest to 100kmph in less than five seconds.

On the safety front, four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist come standard. The brake discs are vented and grooved rather than cross-drilled for maximum effectiveness. Stability control is also standard, despite the DB9’s sticky 19-inch wheels and tyres. Every DB9 comes equipped with side airbags and a rollover protection system that deploys roll hoops from the 2+2 ’s rear seat headrests.

The DB9 is available in two variants: coupe and ‘Volante’ – with each as evocative and suave as James Bond who is relentlessly interwoven with the Aston Martin brand.
