2008 Dodge Charger | new car review

Posted on Sep 22, 2008 by

The 2008 Charger is like none other. It’s a full-size, four-door sedan that makes a bold design statement and backs it up with serious horsepower. It is big and heavy, measuring more than 16 feet in length and tipping the scales at near two tons. The present day Charger is competent, responsive and entertaining akin to the hot rods of yesteryears, and is packaged with modern day creature comforts.

Dominating the front of the car is the trademark Dodge crosshair grille, chromed on the SXT and R/T and body-coloured on the SE. For 2008, the Charger gets minor interior design changes and revised entertainment options. Package includes Dodge’s MyGig, a 20 gigabyte hard drive, a new instrument panel and centre console as well as upgraded soft-touch surfaces. Dodge’s UConnect hands-free cell-phone link is also upgraded with integrated iPod interface.

The Charger model line is sporty and illustrates just how multi-talented and accomplished today’s high-performance cars are. The base Charger comes with a 250hp 3.5-litre V6 and a five-speed automatic transmission with Dodge’s AutoStick manual shift gate. The R/T models have a 340hp HEMI 5.7-litre V8 and the five-speed AutoStick automatic. The R/T can be upgraded to 350 horsepower by ordering the Road/Track package.

Safety features that come standard on all Charger models include two-stage front airbags, tyre-pressure monitor, and rear-seat LATCH child safety seat anchors. Antilock brakes with brake assist, traction control and electronic stability control, head-protecting side curtain airbags for both seating rows and torso-protecting front side airbags are standard on all but SE, where they are optional.
