2008 Chevrolet Tahoe | new car review

Posted on Sep 22, 2008 by

In many ways the backbone of ’s SUV range, the 2008 Tahoe is one good looking and very competent 4×4. Coming into the 2008 model year, the Tahoe is virtually unchanged from last year barring some tweaks here and there along with a new colour palette. The 2008 is available in four trim levels: LS, LT, LTZ and Z71.

Available in rear- and four-wheel-drive versions, the full-size Chevrolet Tahoe SUV rides on a strong, stiffer chassis that affords sophistication, comfort, and performance. It offers a choice of robust V8 engines; the 355-hp 5.3-litre V8 now comes with Active Fuel Management technology that shuts down half of the cylinders under light loads to boost fuel economy. A four-speed automatic transmission remains standard. A slightly lower center of gravity and revised steering and suspension systems improve handling while maintaining a smooth ride.

Chevy Tahoe’s handsome, conservative exterior is unashamedly big and boxy, though slightly more aerodynamic looking than the previous generation’s. It features a body-coloured horizontal grille, jewel-like headlamps and fog lights, and a wraparound fascia.

Standard on the new Tahoe LS and LT are 17-inch wheels, with the LTZ getting bigger 20-inch wheels. The Z71 version incorporates 18-inch wheels shod with multi-terrain tyres. The Z71 is a true off-roading vehicle with intense capabilities, thanks in part to an increased approach angle of 24 degrees.

The Tahoe’s cabin is quite generous and it can accommodate five to nine passengers in comfortable surroundings, especially when ordered with the available front bench and third-row seating. All three rows offer spacious seating, with even adults being accommodated comfortably in the third row. There is two-tone colour scheme along with new, softer, low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. LED backlighting for the instruments and chrome accents on instruments and vents further accentuate the luxury feel in the interior.

The Tahoe is Chevrolet’s second-largest SUV, next to the Suburban and despite its big, bruiser image, is quite a competent vehicle. While there is a portrayal of modernity in its design, it’s sad to see the four-speed gearbox when its rivals have an extra cog.
