2008 BMW X5 | new car review

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 by

The X5 is ’s American-built SAV that was completely redesigned and introduced last year. Quintessentially, ’s biggest SA(U)V has become a symbol of being upwardly mobile and a contemporary status symbol. It is on the black top that it thrives better and rarely does its owner expects the X5 to deliver ‘driving experience’ off the tarmac. Like an aged fermented beverage, the 2008 X5 seems to be getting better and better thanks to an extensive array of technical, space and design improvements.

The redesign has allowed the car to grow in dimension. As a result it is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor. The X5 now also offers a third row seat as an option for those customers not too worried about cargo space making it a seven-passenger vehicle. With the increased interior room comes a host of new features, including standard 18-inch wheels, a tyre-pressure monitor, 10-way power front seats, new leather colour schemes, new occupant-detection sensor in front passenger seat and improved cargo area. Options include active steering and power automatic tailgate. BMW has not cut corners on the inside, giving this burly SUV a cabin which is up there with the best luxury saloons available. As always, standard fare includes dual-zone
automatic climate control, rear climate controls as comfort zone equipment.

BMW X5 is offered with two powertrain options in the Middle East; the 3.0si with a 268hp six-cylinder engine, and the potent range topping 350hp 4.8i V8 coupled to a more responsive six-speed automatic transmission. The xDrive all-wheel drive is standard as always and comes with ABS and traction control. A diesel variant of 3.0-litre capacity is also available offering outstanding torque.

To control all this testosterone bending power, all X5 versions have a proven and reliable set of safety, handling and performance
technology.

Although, the X5 is far from a hard-core off-roader, it has built up a reputation for excellent driving dynamics and has become
popular with customers who like to enjoy the fast pace of life on road.
