2008 Bentley Continental GTC | new car review

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 by

The Continental GT is a grand tourer coupe with two doors and a 2+2 seating arrangement that was heralded as not only the fastest in the marque’s 83-year old history but has also set the concept of Grand Tourer for a completely new generation.

The 2008 Bentley Continental GTC is a huge success for Bentley as it successfully brought a niche, halo model  car into an accessible customer reach car. Cheap by Bentley’s standards, it hit the right note with those with cash to burn.

GT Styling cues include pillarless cabin, minimal front overhang, pronounced haunches, distinctive ‘face’ featuring large inner headlamps and a flush mounted rear spoiler that rises at speed.

Despite its two-doors, the car’s inside is comfy and spacious with ample room for four. Inside, everything is double stitched leather, solid wood, or metal. There is no plastic or vinyl. The two rear seats are nicely contoured for comfort, and while leg room is not generous, it is adequate if the front seat is not all the way back. A surprisingly roomy trunk has room for luggage of two or more people, plus golf clubs or skis as well.

The Continental GT is built on the Volkswagen D platform and is powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine producing 560bhp. Top speed is around 314 kmph but that’s absolutely academical. It has the punch to take off smoothly and quickly from standstill and do it in a manner that is in sync with the persona of the car. The GT’s drive is sent to all four wheels through a paddle-operated, six speed automatic gearbox which is a first for Bentley. Electronic stability programme guarantees all year round versatility in all situations.

It is difficult to say ‘good value’ in the same sentence as ‘nearly AED 1 million motor car’ but the Bentley Continental GT makes it as easy as it is ever likely to be. With more money to spare one can opt for luxury open top motoring in the Continental GTC. This version of the GT was first presented in September 2005 and since then has attracted many buyers to its cause. Despite using a soft tonneau roof combined with a heated glass rear screen, the GTC is as structurally strong as its hardtop sibling. The roof opens or closes in 25 seconds and is produced by specialists Karmann.
