2008 Audi TT | new car review

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 by

Auto critics who predicted that would be hard pressed to present a successive version that will stay true to the excellent and elegant package of the first generation TT sportscar have once again been proved wrong. The new TT is now bigger than before yet lighter.

Available in and  forms, the comes with front-wheel drive as well as quattro. Both body styles have put on muscle but not weight and there is a new found felineness about them. No more are they like dinky toys but serious toys for girls and boys.

The interior of the car is also vastly different, bringing the TT in line with the standards set by Audi’s more expensive models. Audi’s interiors are usually the subject of much praise, and the TT does not disappoint. The leather seats are offset by the aluminium trim and soft touch materials. Contemporary in design, the interior is put together in typical Audi fashion – fit and finish being top class.

Revised V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder engines are available, with emphasis on performance being the norm. The 2.0T (T as in Turbo) engined TT is available only with Audi’s S-tronic direct shift gearbox (DSG), which is a clutchless manual transmission that can be operated as an automatic or as a manual via the gearshift or steering wheel paddles. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on 3.2 quattros, and the S tronic is also available.

Safety equipment includes front airbags, seat-mounted front side airbags that protect the head and thorax, front knee airbags, ABS with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, traction control, antiskid control, active head restraints, and a tyre-pressure monitor.

The TT continues to lead the sector it created, for sporty cars which appeal to a broad cross section of the car-buying public. It is a logical step before graduating to Audi’s suber-fast R8 sports car.
