2008 Audi R8 | new car review

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 by

Racing car for the road, the R8 is an exotic sports car built to take on the likes of Ferrari’s F430 and Porsche 911 GT2. It features an exotic aluminium space frame, amidst which sits a mid-mounted compact V8 engine making 420 horsepower. The most stunning visual feature is the transparent cover over the engine, with LED lighting to show it off.

The R8 has every creature comfort of a luxury car, including admirable legroom, and many options, from a navigation system to a 12-speaker, 465-watt sound system.

The R8’s styling has been defined in large parts to its ability to be aerodynamically slick. Incorporating many facets of the Lamborghini Gallardo with which it shares many components, the R8 can be loosely termed as a German masquerading as an Italian – its shapely aesthetics combines well with the powerful V8.

As befits its racing pedigree, the R8 gets a flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel, allowing more kneeroom. There’s digital speed readout between the big numbered tachometer and speedometer. A proper two-seater, there is enough room behind the seats for a briefcase or laptop without impairing legroom. Seats are firm and a study in leather; although being sporty in their design ingress and egress is impeded somewhat. The dash is dominated by more horizontal slats, for the vents, while the centre stack slopes away from the driver at an angle. Audi has kept the controls simple with climate control, for example, being operated by actual knobs. Needless to say, the cabin is well finished.

The trunk in front has a capacity of 3.5 cubic feet, which is more than it sounds. With another 3.2 cubic feet behind the seats, there’s plenty of room for a road trip for two.

In the R8, Audi has a sports car to rival most sports cars, if not all. It has the driveability to be used as an everyday commuter and can turn into a serious tool for track days.
