2008 Mazda MX-5 | new car review

’s contender in
the affordable sports coupe/ segment and a main rival to the
Honda S2000, the MX-5 was at last launched in the Middle East, making
its debut at the Dubai Motor Show last year. Popularly called the
‘Miata’ elsewhere, this nomenclature is not used here in the
Middle East by Mazda, preferring the MX-5 nomenclature. Although
Mazda offers a retractable soft-top as well as a power-operated
hard-top variant of the MX-5, our region gets only the latter model.

The MX-5 is a small
roadster with minimal necessary weight and mechanical complexity
while being technologically modern. As a result, the MX-5 is designed
with a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and
four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension. It has a
longitudinally-mounted four cylinder engine coupled to a manual
transmission.

There have been three
generations of the MX-5, consisting of major stylistic and mechanical
upgrades. The first generation was produced from 1989 to 1997; the
second gen MX-5 ran from 1998-2004 with the current version
introduced in 2005. Such is its timeless design that it needs just
minor makeovers to keep it right up there in the style department.
The exterior styling resembles the original design while adopting a
clean, more muscular profile and some design elements to reinforce
the family ties with the Mazda RX-8.

The engine is the new
16-valve, 2.0-litre MZR I4, producing 166bhp and 190Nm of torque
coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. A limited slip differential
is also part of the standard feature. The suspension has changed from
a 4-wheel double wishbone setup to a front wishbone/rear multilink
setup. Technologies like traction control and stability control are
also part of the standard fitments making this roadster a complete
driver’s package.

This is the car that

really started the roadster boom a couple of decades ago, inducing

other manufacturers to follow suit. Even though employing small
engines, the MX-5 remains a fun-to-drive affordable sports car that
can put the blushes on many a bigger and much powerful opposition.
