2008 Mazda 3 | new car review

Ever since its debut in
the compact segment, the has established a reputation as an
innovative, stylish and performance-driven vehicle. In a segment
perceived to be dull, with functionality taking precedence over form,
the Mazda3 is good to look at and fun to be in.

A 1.6-litre four-cylinder
unit producing 103bhp and 145Nm of torque provides power and is mated
to an electronically controlled, four-speed automatic transmission.
Last year, Mazda3 Sporthatch was added to the line-up to attract
younger buyers looking for sportier performance.

In the looks department,
the Mazda3 follows the family image as espoused by its bigger
sibling, last year’s Mazda6. In fact, it looks and feels like a
scaled down version of the 6, but with tauter lines. This gives it a
kind of aggressive overtone but in a very positive manner. Fit and
finish is excellent, both inside and outside.

Meticulous attention to
detail extends to the interior. It is longer, wider and taller to
create a cabin that offers good front and rear shoulder room. All
controls, displays and switches are within easy reach of the driver
and are comparable with what’s available in the competition.

Quite a smart looker, the
Mazda3 has been doing pretty well in the Middle East in a most
unobtrusive manner. It is a good match for the Toyota Corolla, Nissan
Tiida and Honda Civic but people just haven’t heard about its
virtues enough. Time to do so now.
