2008 BMW X6 | new car review

X6 is the third X model to be launched by . The German car maker likes to call this a Sports Activity Coupe – a world first.

The four-seat 2008 is aimed at a different customer to X3 and X5 owners, appealing to the driver who enjoys the command driving position, but one that also savors the characteristics of a sports car.

The all-new vehicle redefines the very notion of a coupe – with five doors and four sculpted seats, a higher ride and loads of cargo space. It defies coupe conventions in one jaw-dropping look, combining coupe agility and SUV versatility, taking the coupe to a
higher level.

From the side, the unique design and proportions of the BMW X6 are striking. Its tapering roof line and long rear body overhang give the car a stretched coupe silhouette. To accentuate this, the roof line reaches its highest point directly behind the steering wheel tapering off to the rear to emphasize the dynamic wedge shape of the car. Flared wheel arches, standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels and a wide rear track all serve to underscore the vehicle’s sporting intent.

The BMW X6 is available in two engine variants: the xDrive50i (4.4 V8 engine, 407hp, 600Nm torque) and the xDrive35i (3.0 inline
six-cylinder engine, 306hp, 400 Nm torque), both with Twin Turbo and direct injection.

Twinned with BMW’s benchmark xDrive four wheel drive system, Dynamic Performance Control makes its world debut on the BMW X6. Dynamic Performance Control works by spreading drive forces from side to side at the two rear wheels as required in a given situation. It is the only system of its kind in the world able to provide its stabilizing effect both under power and with the engine on overrun. The system works by detecting possible over- or understeer of the vehicle in, for example, a bend. This is achieved by transferring additional wheel speed to the outer rear wheel to push the car round the corner rather than applying brake force to the inner wheels as currently happens with traditional stability control systems.

The BMW X6 will come equipped with all the bells and whistles as expected of a vehicle bearing the propeller logo. So expect xenon headlights, front and rear ‘Park Distance Control’, sports suspension and a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles. Inside, some of the standard equipment highlights include part electric seat adjustment and 6.5-inch color display screen with iDrive controller.

Optional highlights of the X6 include BMW’s Adaptive Drive handling package, Active Steering, Head-up Display, Adaptive Headlights, High-beam Assistant, Reversing Camera and four-zone climate control.
