2008 Chery Wind Cloud | new car review

In its bid to become a global player in the years ahead, is targeting different segments of the market and that’s natural. While the V5, B11/Eastar and to a certain extent the Tiggo are what could be termed as the
Chinese company’s upper-end models, it is the mainstream budget models that keep a company’s bottomline ticking. In Chery’s case, this budget model is the A11/Wind Cloud. Unusual name, must say!

The A11 is a compact sedan derived from the ancient Seat Toledo (Mk. II VW Polo) and frankly looks the part of being a bit out of touch with the times. Well, it has been touched up a bit with Chery trying to spruce up its
exterior. The front looks quite like the old Nissan Sunny and that’s the A11’s best view.

Inside its all old school design; Chery has tried to mask the straight line dashboard with faux pas wooden trim and leather but has lost the plot completely. The top-end version gets a sun-roof, of all things!

The 2008 is powered by a 1.6-litre engine which makes 94 horsepower and 132 Nm of torque. Manual and automatic transmissions are offered. Like other models in the range, the A11 comes equipped with ABS brakes, dual air bags with side impact beams in the doors.

The A11 or Wind Cloud is a typical car which is best suited for the local Chinese market where automotive mobility is on the rise and people lap up whatever is pushed into the marketplace. Sadly, it just cannot make the cut in world markets, despite its low price and the gimmicks thrown in as a sop. Thankfully, a new replacement for the A11 is being readied with inputs from Europe in its design – both exterior and interior. Hopefully this will mark a big change in the way the Chinese manufacturers go about challenging the establishment worldwide. But don’t expect a sea change in the immediate future though.
