2008 BYD F3 | new car review

is better known as a lithium ion battery maker and its foray in car manufacturing began after it purchased bankrupt government auto maker Qingchuan in 2003. The F3 is the first car completely designed by to hit both domestic and export markets. The F3 is a Toyota Corolla sized vehicle and looking at it closely, actually has more than a passing resemblance with the Toyota. The 2008 is 4,533mm long and just a few mm shorter than the current Corolla with styling loosely based on its previous generation. However, BYD designers smartened up the front and rear ends to give the car its own identity.

The build quality and interiors will surprise a lot of people who have different views about cars of Chinese origins. The dashboard is well laid out like the older Corolla and has sharply back-lit instrumentation. Seats are cushy and softly padded. Head and legroom are quite generous. Fit and finish though remains a big question mark.

The powertrain hardware comes from Mitsubishi. A 98hp 1.6-litre 4-cylinder normally aspirated DOHC engine from the G18 series propels the car’s front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. Suspension package is tailored for comfort and uses MacPherson struts and torsion beams.

For its price point, the car is exceptionally well-kitted. There’s choice of fabric and leather upholstery, 60:40 split rear seats and arm rests. Driver also get power steering, keyless entry, manually adjustable air-conditioning. Infotainment includes MP3 enabled cassette/CD and radio with controls on steering wheel. Safety includes a rigid cage with impact absorbing zones, dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD.
